As Craigieburn continues to develop it’s lifestyle scene, more and more delicious and affordable eateries are opening up.
For those who love brunching after a morning walk, the Waterside Cafe is the place for you! As the name suggests, it’s located by the Highlands lake and serves as a tranquil ‘chill out’ spot, with a beautiful view and adjacent walking track. Explore further and you’ll find the quirky Jamaica Blue Cafe and Cafe Grasslands. Zaatar Central, located in Craigieburn Central Shopping Centre, provides you with a truly authentic taste of Middle Eastern food mixed with classic western dishes. A cross between a bakery and cafe, it truly has you covered for all you food and drink cravings!
As well as hosting an array of food and drink options, Craigieburn Central acts as the town’s hub for all your shopping needs. You’ll find popular retail shops like General Pants and Target, while supermarket giants Coles and Aldi serve all your grocery needs.
Keeping in line with Craigieburn’s conservation and environmentally friendly vibe, Craigieburn Central is currently running an initiative that encourages patrons to bin their used coffee cups into dedicated Coffee Cup Recycling bins located around the shopping centre. The used coffee cups go towards the Simply Cups recycling program that sees the cups transformed into new products, which includes garden beds and building materials!
Parks and recreation
There’s plenty to see and do in Craigieburn. If you’re after an active lifestyle, there’s an abundance of various sporting facilities including a public golf course, a Leisure Centre with a gym and swimming pool and the Craigieburn Sporting Club.
Even more exciting is the upcoming opening of Newbury Park — a $4.8 million parkland comprising of a playground, picnic area, ½ a basketball court, skate facility and open grass area. It’s also home to the new Hume Hockey and Lacrosse Centre!
For the kids, there’s the Splash Aqua Park that has two giant water slides and hosts school holiday activities.Additionally, there’s the Highlands Lake Playground near the Waterside Cafe and the Golden Sun Moth Playground — named after the Golden Sun moth which was discovered exclusively in the Craigieburn grasslands in 2003! Craigieburn Central also host the Craigie Kids Club every Tuesday as well as free Craigie Kids Arts and Crafts every Saturday!
When the afternoons and nights permit, gather your picnic rug with your favourite drop of wine and head to Mount Ridley Lookout. Located on the edge of Craigieburn, this lookout provides an incredible view of Melbourne CBD. Found at the top of a hill with beautiful houses lining the streets, the lookout also has a playground for the kids and plenty of park benches for chilling out.
Education and transport
Located only 24 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD, the commute to Southern Cross Station will see you arrive in just 44 mins from your local Craigieburn station. For those who prefer to drive, the Hume Freeway is right at your doorstep.
When it comes to education, you’re spoiled for choice in both Craigieburn and surrounding suburbs. For the little ones, there’s Goodstart Early Learning Centre. Aitken Creek Primary, a public-private partnership school, is located in central Craigieburn, while Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School is only a stone’s throw away. Craigieburn Secondary College and Mount Ridley among other options for older students.
The Hume Global Learning Centre in Craigieburn is the newest hub for communal learning and events, offering the growing local community a space to learn, share knowledge and inspire creativity. The space also houses the Craigieburn Library, a gallery and exhibition space, an occasional care facility, Council’s Customer Service Centre and Deakin Multiversity Office.
